Women in Islam #2: Role of Women in Society

Ever heard... "A woman should stay at home!" or "Her voice is awrah!" or "She is a fitnah, keep her hidden!"

WOMEN IN ISLAM Class #2 is out!

Role of Women in Society: Women in the workforce, dawah, and politics

How can a woman interact and participate in her society? What roles can she play? In this class, Safiya Ravat discusses what scholars on both sides of these issues have debated for over a century.

We discuss the scholarly arguments and counter arguments to: -A woman should stay at home -Her voice is part of her awrah – men should not hear it -If she wants to speak in public, it should be behind a veil -She is a fitnah. If she was to be out in public with men at work, as a teacher, judge, leader – men would be looking at her and this will cause fitnah.

We discuss the scholarly arguments and counterarguments for a woman being able to: -Work in a job where she may interact with men -Teach mixed gatherings of men and women -Lead prayer from a mixed gathering of men and women (FYI the answer is No by consensus) -Hold the position of a judge in a court -Hold a leadership position in organizations/ government -Hold the position of president/prime minister of a country

This is the second of our monthly series on Women's Fiqh.
